• Operational Permits

  • In addition to other permits required by the State of North Carolina, Surry County, and the Town of Elkin, those taking part in certain construction or operation activities must apply for permits with the Elkin Fire Department as required by Section 105 of the North Carolina State Fire Prevention Code.

    Permits are required for the following operations:

    • Amusement building operation
    • Carnivals and fairs
    • Combustible dust-producing operations
    • Covered mall buildings:
      • Placement of retail fixtures and displays, concession equipment, displays of highly combustible goods and similar items in the mall
      • Display of liquid- or gas-fired equipment in the mall
      • Use of open flame or flame-producing equipment in the mall
    • Exhibits and trade shows
    • Explosives manufacturing, storage, handling, sale, or use
    • Flammable and combustible liquids:
      • Operation of tank vehicles, equipment, tanks, plants, terminals, wells, fuel-dispensing stations, refineries, distilleries, and similar facilities where these liquids are produced, processed, transported, stored, dispensed, or used
      • Temporarily placing a tank storing such liquids our of service for more than ninety days
      • Changing the type of contents stored in a tank to a material that poses a greater hazard than that for which the tank was designed or constructed
      • Manufacturing, processing, blending, or refining of these liquids
      • Dispensing of liquid fuels into fuel tanks
    • Fumigation and thermal insecticidal fogging
    • Liquid- or gas-fueled vehicles or equipment in assembly buildings
    • Private fire hydrant use, operation, or removal from service
    • Pyrotechnic special effects material use and handling
    • Spraying or dipping using flammable liquids, combustible liquids, or application of certain combustible powders
    • Operation of temporary membrane structures or tents unless exempted by 105.6.43

    Permits are required for the following construction projects:

    • Automatic fire extinguishing system installation or modification
    • Battery system installation if the liquid capacity is over 50 gallons
    • Installation, modification, repair, abandonment, or removal of compressed gas systems
    • Installation or alteration to certain outdoor stationary cryogenic fluid storage systems
    • Fire alarm and detection system (and related equipment) installation or modification
    • Fire pump (and related equipment) installation or modification
    • Flammable or combustible liquids:
      • Pipeline installation, modification, or repair
      • Installation, construction, or alteration of related tank vehicles, equipment, tanks, plants, terminals, wells, fuel-dispensing stations, refineries, distilleries, and similar facilities
      • Flammable or combustible liquid tank installation, alteration, removal, abandonment, or disposal
    • Hazardous materials storage facility installation, repair, abandonment, removal, closure, or modification
    • Industrial oven installation
    • Private fire hydrant installation or modification
    • Spraying or dipping facility installation or modification
    • Standpipe system installation, modification, or removal
    • Temporary membrane structure or tent erection unless exempted by 105.7.14
